Introduction The purpose of the paper is to investigate prisons, how they operate and the effectives of them. It will give a brief insight to the history of prisons and how they operate in the modern day, but the controversial factor to it, is if alternative correctional methods such as counselling or community service benefit our day to day living. To truly understand why and how modern criminal punishments are what they are today, it is important to understand the creation of the now vital institution within British society.
